It’s Flashback Friday! Since my site just went live yesterday, I figure what better to go back to where it all started, graduation from The Art Institute! I graduated in 2008, which just happened to be RIGHT when the market took a huge dive and all of Las Vegas came to an abrupt halt. Las Vegas’s economy lives and breathes off of tourism. Our city depends on it. In 2008, layoffs hit an all time high. Casinos and hotels saw the lowest occupancy rate ever. New construction stopped. Which meant the need for designers…..was non existent. Horrible timing, right? The worst. I weeded my way through, and managed to find a job with JBA Consulting Engineers. I was hired on as a CAD drafter in their low voltage department. Putting to use a very small, small part of my education. That position was short lived, with huge lay offs hitting a quick year later. It took a full 12 months of hard searching to find another position within my field, working in a design showroom. It was so nice being able to help people turn their homes into what they visually dreamed of. I got married and had our sweet, darling daughter, Cassidy. Since her birth, I’ve worked from home. Back to doing CAD drafting for local contractors. It was great being able to work from home, watching our daughter grow. Last year I was presented with the opportunity to do exactly what I’ve always wanted to do. Actual interior design work! As an independent consultant. I’m thrilled!! It’s been a long time coming, and so rewarding.
Here is a snippet of an original post of my graduation! Happy Flashback Friday, everyone!
Ahhhhh…I am done! Officially graduated, with Deans List Honors and I got Best In Show at the Portfolio Show!!! It feels so good to be finished.
You can’t tell by this picture but my feet were killing me and I’d only been standing in those shoes for about an hour. Imagine what my feet felt like 8 hours later!
Our graduation ceremony was held in the Grand Hall of the Fashion Show Mall, on the runway they use for fashion shows (clever).
I was thrown a big graduation party, all of my closest friends and family came. It was so great to be able to celebrate with everyone!
